![]() However, if they have even a 12 DEX, then the odds of instant death are only 12%.Īnd things only get better for stronger characters. Looking only at the damage roll, there is a 98% chance that you will roll more than their 32 health. These are your most vunerable characters. Ok, so assuming your players took the average HP on level up, a Wiz/Sorc with 12 CON will have 32 HP. So it takes into account the odds that you roll the disintegration ray, the odds that they fail the save, and then the odds that you roll enough damage to insta-kill them. Preface: unless otherwise stated, all these odds are calculated from the moment you target the character. I recommend this video if this ends up happening: It helps remind PCs that in this game, there is no plot-armor. I would honestly advise letting a PC die over fudging rolls. Simply roll with it (pun intended), and let it happen. It adds spice to what could be simply another dungeon. These things happen and this game isn’t supposed to be played by immortals. Mistakes happen, dice roll well, dice roll poorly, and players forget key abilities. I would avoid fudging except as an absolute last resort. Don’t tell them though, or else the magic is gone and they feel the battle was decided before they even rolled for initiative. This can make the plays feel like the battle is much more exciting and challenging without outright killing PCs. Have an attack barely leave a PC alive, or allow a wimpy boss to roll a little extra high sometimes. Fudging rolls can be a useful tactic if used as a last resort. This way they will be more prepared and can use some clever spells and tactics to counter it.įudge the rolls (but don’t tell them you did, even many sessions later). Have some dust piles around the entrance or maybe an npc/item tell them about the beholder’s different rays. If you roll the disintegration ray and you are worried about an insta-kill, have it attack a target it can’t kill with the damage, or maybe have it just bite instead. ![]() So with that insta-kill, I suggest a few solutions: Which for that, I would use it’s dimwitted reasoning and have it come in for a bite attack once or twice.īeholders are powerful because they are smart and will play off of an enemies weaknesses. The only real concern I have is making sure the thing isn’t hovering too high that it makes it impossible for your melee fighters to hit. The only thing that doesn’t affect it is prone, which depending on the party may not ever come up. Lastly, it’s health is actually relatively low compared to the multi-resistant monsters of challenge rating 5. This means it will likely choose very poorly when it comes to picking targets of its eye rays and cone (using dex saves on the rogue, using anti-magic cone on a barbarian, etc). It’s dex makes initiative and saves very low and it’s intelligence makes it very stupid compared to its highly intelligent living version. You’d be surprised how much damage a party can deal against a monster with only one semi-deadly attack a turn. Not to mention the stronger ray doesn’t deal half damage on the save. Only half of these do damage as well, and they are some of the more common saves (con and dex). First and foremost, it can only cast a single eye ray per turn. That being said, there are things that make a zombie beholder much weaker than its living counterparts. If it was a relatively short dungeon leading to the encounter, it’s a bit more balanced. If this is a boss battle at the end of a long dungeon where players would have spent most of their abilities, then this would be a very challenging fight. “Fair” is very much based on the context.
